An oil on newspaper study of courageous Anne Fairbairn, completed in 1990. From the series titled Eight Portraits (see One Path for Two, Cross Dressing Cowboy and Daughter for Peace). This work is inspired by a newspaper article about the Australian author and poet who donned traditional Saudi headdress during her visit to Baghdad in order to appeal to Iraqi officials for the release of 34 fellow countrymen being held hostage at the time. Although a preliminary study, I found the brushy roughness here a fruitful rhyme with the low res newsprint photo of my subject.
