“Commenced on site and completed in the studio, this watercolour relates to a place that I sometimes visit on early morning walks. What draws me here are its essential elements: the patterns of the landforms, the flora and the gorgeous light. There is an understated, timeless quality in this landscape that I find so compelling and have tried to convey in this work.”
That’s the caption composed for this sketch when I submitted it to the 2017 Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Little did I know it would be chosen as a finalist. At the time I thought it might be fun to present a small, modest work in stark contrast to the large bold paintings normally exhibited.
